NAB CRYSTAL RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO WTOP-FM

LAS VEGAS -- WTOP-FM Washington, DC today was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service.

Ten winners were chosen among 50 finalists. Recipients were recognized at today's NAB Show Radio Luncheon.

WTOP-FM provided this description of its accomplishments in 2009:

In 2009, WTOP Radio celebrated 40 years as Washington's all-news radio station. Winner of five National Edward R. Murrow Awards including best Web site and the award for "Overall Excellence," WTOP knows that it has an obligation to go above and beyond to serve its community. Among its efforts in 2009, WTOP helped raise more than $9 million for local organizations, and contributed 16,300 minutes of public service programming valued at more than $6.5 million. WTOP reacted to the tough economic times by creating programming and events to address the issues affecting our listeners' daily lives. Round-the-clock coverage helped people get around when major highways and bridges were closed for the Presidential Inauguration. We added new features including "WTOP Saves You Money" and "Home Value High Wire." We collected 100 pints of blood, gave out 400 free flu shots, and WTOP staffers devoted more than 3,000 volunteer hours to the Washington-metro community. During the "Blizzard of 2009," WTOP sprang to action offering nonstop regional coverage. Staffers even pooled resources and 4-wheel drive vehicles to get each other as well as local emergency workers where they needed to go. WTOP is and will continue to be Washington's community leader.

The NAB Show Radio Luncheon, sponsored by ASCAP, featured a presentation by Phil Hendrie, nationally syndicated radio host and satirist. During the luncheon, legendary Texas radio personality Ron Chapman was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
