NAB CRYSTAL RADIO AWARD PRESENTED TO KSWD-FM

LAS VEGAS -- KSWD-FM Los Angeles today was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service.

Ten winners were chosen among 50 finalists. Recipients were recognized at today's NAB Show Radio Luncheon.

KSWD-FM provided this description of its accomplishments in 2009:

The Sound's mission is to be "All About the Music," specifically to offer music in the service of our community. When two firefighters were killed battling wildfires, The Sound supported their families through a music request on-air fundraiser. During 2009, The Sound launched its own charitable arm called Project M.U.S.I.C. (Music for Underfunded Schools in California). On-air appeals and station events raise money for music education via the GRAMMY Museum Education Program and Arts Advantage Program of Orange County Department of Education. To assist the Los Angeles Parks department, The Sound coordinated bands to perform free weekly concerts at Pershing Square. The Sound has helped organizations like the American Heart Association, Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity, and numerous others to raise awareness to their causes. The Sound gives all employees in all departments 40 paid hours for volunteerism per year and matches up to $600 in personal donations. The staff spent a weekday cleaning litter from an area beach - without publicity - because it was the right thing to do. In just two years of existence, 100.3 The Sound has established that community service is our business. We are proud to be making a difference in Southern California.

The NAB Show Radio Luncheon, sponsored by ASCAP, featured a presentation by Phil Hendrie, nationally syndicated radio host and satirist. During the luncheon, legendary Texas radio personality Ron Chapman was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
